R.A. Kartini, born Raden Ajeng Kartini on April 21, 1879, was a noblewoman from Jepara. She was the daughter of Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosoningrat and M.A. Ngasirah, with her father being the regent of Jepara at the time.

As the fifth child out of eleven siblings, Kartini had the unique opportunity to attend the Europeesche Lagere School (ELS), a school for Dutch and wealthy Javanese children. At ELS, Kartini learned Dutch. Unfortunately, she could only attend school until the age of 12 due to traditional Javanese customs requiring women to enter seclusion.

During her seclusion, Kartini taught herself to read and write Dutch and maintained correspondence with her friends from the Netherlands, including Rosa Abendanon. She also read numerous European books, newspapers, and magazines, which exposed her to progressive European ideas about women's rights.

Kartini's exposure to these new ideas inspired her to advocate for the advancement of Javanese women. At that time, Javanese women faced limited social and cultural limitations, and Kartini believed they deserved equality, freedom, and opportunities.

Although her seclusion restricted her activities, Kartini's letters became a powerful form of advocacy. She wrote about her ideas on women's emancipation and highlighted the struggles faced by Javanese women, including the limitations imposed by customs and societal norms.

For modern women, R.A. Kartini's legacy continues to serve as an inspiring example in several ways, which are advocating for educational equality, opening opportunities for creative and professional pursuits, encouraging women's confidence in their careers, and commitment to community service.
